Sparrows

A café on the edge of town, a researcher and a dangerous discovery.

Sparrows begins in a small neighborhood café run by a Chinese family, on the edge of an ordinary-looking town. Every morning, among espresso cups, warm pastries and the crumpled pages of the Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy’s sports daily, the same faces come back.

Retirees arguing about soccer as if it were a matter of state. Lonely men who say little but always take the same table. Women who move through the café as if it were a second home. People passing through. Factory workers. Drivers. Someone who never seems to be in a hurry. Someone else who seems to be hiding.

Among them is Elia Ventura, a young researcher who allows himself the same ritual every morning before heading to the lab, where he works on an experimental technology that links artificial intelligence with the human nervous system.

And it is right there, in that ordinary café on the margins, that everything begins.

One morning Elia watches the sparrows moving between the tables. He sees them arrive together, stop, study one another, avoid invisible collisions, sense danger, and share the crumbs without really fighting over space.

It isn’t just instinct. It isn’t just animal behavior.

It’s as if those small bodies shared a silent form of communication, an invisible network of signals, mutual attention and constant adaptation.

In that instant, an idea is born.

What if the connection between artificial intelligence and human consciousness shouldn’t start from control… but from relationship?

From then on, the café becomes much more than a café. It becomes an observatory of people. A place where lives on the margins, tiny details and seemingly pointless conversations slowly begin to weave into something much bigger.

Because while Elia develops his research, someone starts taking too close an interest in his work.

And what looked like a simple experiment meant for a few labs slowly turns into a story of surveillance, international interests, betrayal, and ordinary people caught up in something they can’t yet understand.
